Celebrating Our Community's Cultures: Merienda

August 23, 2024 5:30-8:00pm

Join us for our next ‘Celebrating Our Community’s Cultures’ event, spotlighting the culinary talents of our very own Leslie Damaso!

In my travels, I tend to seek out Filipino restaurants. I get so excited about the variations I might experience. And just like the Philippines with its 7,000 islands, there is not one description of a dish. There are shared dishes but depending on the region, the flavors change in ways such as saltiness, sourness (either from vinegars or sour fruits), creaminess (usually from coconut milk) or spiciness. In the United States, I have experienced exciting dishes from coast-to-coast.

Beyond the states, I’ve even had Finnish-Filipino food and Japanese-Filipino food. What makes Filipino cuisine special is that it is in conversation with the place. What better way to meet and get to know each other than through merienda or snack time!”

About The Book Kitchen

Nicole’s culinary journey led her from Chicago to the charming town of Mineral Point, where serendipity played a hand in her next adventure. She crossed paths with Keith Burrows and Leslie Damaso, the spirited owners of The Republic of Letters Bookstore.

It was in this delightful meeting of minds and shared passions that The Book Kitchen was born. This collaboration brought together the love for both literature and delectable cuisine, creating a unique and enchanting culinary destination for the community and beyond.

Together, they embarked on a culinary and literary journey, crafting a space where the written word and the art of cooking come together in perfect harmony, offering patrons a truly remarkable experience for the senses.
